Ramadan: Muslims got to accept restrictions, restrain desires ( Dr. Mahathir)
KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 -- Former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on all Muslimswithin the country to simply accept various restrictions within the environment once they are fasting this Ramadan.
Dr Mahathir said the restrictions whichneed to be put in situ are aimed toward curbing the spread of the COVID-19 infection, and would obviously changed many traditions of the standard celebrations during Ramadan but it might not be a burden if Muslims practise moderation and rein in their desires.
“Among the practicewe've to prevent is mass breaking of fast and performing terawih prayers during a congregation. We also could not purchase breaking of fast delicacies at Ramadan bazaars. aside from that, our movements to go to and break fast with relatives also are affected.
“In another word, this Ramadaninvolves even more patience and greater restraining of desires than before. So whether we are conscious of not, the challenge before us during Ramadan is basically a test of our determination to defend the people and country.
“This is because if we are unableto regulate our desires and still want to perform fasting like previous years, we might be gambling with the lives of Malaysians including we ourselves,” said Dr Mahathir.
According to Dr Mahathir, the sacrifice of Muslims by adhering tothe varied restrictions are far smaller compared to the sacrifice of these at the frontline defending all Malaysians.
He said if all Muslims wereconscious of everything that's happening, insya Allah they might be ready to perform this fast completely and celebrate Syawal with full awareness and gratitude.
